i’m on a boat!
Remember when I told you John had even more plans for my 30th birthday extravaganza? Well, those “more plans” entailed a sailing yacht, a feast, 8 of our besties out here in Hawaii, and an absolutely gorgeous late afternoon on the water. Say it with me…I’M ON A BOAT!
There was a lot of lyrics-quoting going on that day…many an exclamation of “this ain’t Seaworld!”
John chartered a 42.7′ Beneteau sailing yacht from Honolulu Sailing Company, just the right size for our group of 10. Everyone arrived dressed in their nautical best:
We departed from Kewalo Basin and sailed around Waikiki and Diamond Head, taking in the amazing views, sipping cocktails and feasting on some seriously delicious eats. Everyone contributed to the menu, and we ended up with an entirely homemade spread of caramelized onion dip, hummus and pita, deviled eggs, fruit and cheese plates, merguez meatballs with yogurt-mint sauce, ahi skewers, brine shrimp and the most incredible banana bread cupcakes EVER.
On the drinks side, we had everything from champagne and bellinis to beer and jello shots. Oh yes. We brought jello shots, and they were delicious. Recipes to come soon. And there may or may not have been some Smirnoff Ice on board. As birthday girl, I was exempt from the icing, but others were not so lucky. But let’s skip those pictures and get back to the glamorous ladies of the yacht:
And of course the afternoon wouldn’t be complete without some synchronized dives and cannonballs performed by our men. Well, at least they attempted to be synchronized:
John piloted the boat for a while and even changed into his “I’m On a Boat” shirt to add some authenticity (ha). I can’t thank him enough for planning this day. It was by far my best birthday ever…even better than the time I had my birthday at the roller rink (I think I was 10)!
We stayed out until sunset and watched the sun drop down behind the mountains in Waianae.
It was such an amazing day! Perfect weather, great friends, delicious food and an awesome boat. Our captain, Ralph, and first mate, Duke, were great and really helped make it a day to remember. If you’re looking for a boating excursion here on Oahu, we’d definitely recommend checking out Honolulu Sailing Company – they have a great selection of sailing and power yachts to accommodate almost any size party!« in the kitchen: tacos de carnitas dining out: il lupino »
